The stage contains the central action of the event but it also needs to make an impact in itself. A well-designed stage can enhance the whole theme and message you want to communicate through your event and help make the action play out without a hitch.

But, if you have a small event stage with limited space, you may be wondering how to create an impactful display without leaving little to no room to stand. In order to make the most of your small stage for your next event, here are some top layout and design tips from the experts in staging and event sets.

How large will your audience be?

If you only have a tiny space to work with in comparison to your large audience, you’ll need to keep things simple. The stage elements should be bold, large and should be easy to spot and understand from all angles.

If in comparison you have a small audience, you may benefit more from intricate detailing. Your audience will most likely be better able to see all of the elements on your stage and pay close attention to them, so make sure you get the small details right and include more visual displays or props to excite interest.

You may not have as much space as you think

Even a small set up can take up more room than you anticipate due to all the support equipment you’ll need. One way to combat this is to have your stage backed against a wall or in a corner of the event room to make it appear bigger.

You might also want to consider widening the event stage on each side if the room has a low ceiling and you have the space to. Reflecting the set and any props on each side of the stage will make a stronger visual impact as well as making it look bigger.

Opt for lighter light fixtures

Big bulky fixtures will only dwarf the size of your stage. Instead, make it streamlined and slick with lightweight lighting options such as LEDs which can be strategically placed and aren’t set on a heavy truss.

Hide your sound systems

A good tip for a small stage is to raise the stage floor and place your speakers underneath. However if this is not the best option for the acoustics, you could select smaller systems that can be put in line with the stage edges, so that they won’t stick out or take up too much room.

Don’t forget the decoration!

The decoration and design must complement the message you want to put across and be striking to retain interest. Giving your stage background an eye-catching backdrop, or perhaps create a video background if you have available screens. Decoration should extend beyond the stage and be consistent throughout the room. This will tie in your stage elements for more impact, and make the stage seem larger.

Think too about the stage floor — if you’re renting the stage it may be quite worn and detract from the quality of your display. Covering it up with flooring or material in complementary colours or designs of the event or stage theme, will help create a better impression of your event action and your brand.
