PS4.5 or PS4K Debacle

The console space has been heating up in the past few weeks with rumors of a mid-generation upgrade to the PS4.

This has led to many lashing out on social media.

“I bought the console day 1. And now my console is obsolete less than 3 years later?”
“I just bought my PS4 last month and now there is already going to be a new one?”
“So the specs on the new one means the games will play and look better on the new one?”

I’ve seen many tweets like these taking various forms (and many with more vulgarity).

Looking at the specs comparison between the original PS4 and the new “Neo” console are not huge enough for Sony to boast about them.

Folks, we are looking at this all wrong.

Let me propose this to you. Sit back and let your friend Austin G explain this to you and take your fears and anger away.

Sony is also in the TV business. 4K TV’s are now more affordable than they have ever been! There are also plenty of options to close from across all of the television brands. Sony sees how many 4K TV’s they sell and could have a very good idea at how many their competitors in that space have sold as well.

There is not currently a console that takes full advantage of having a 4K TV. This creates the opportunity for Sony to sell even more PS4's then they already have.

Sony will NOT talk about specs.

When Sony announces this PS4K (as I believe it will be named) they will not mention specs. They will talk about the vast number of 4K TV’s in homes right now that do not have a console that can utilize that great display.

If Sony does mention specs they will talk about how you cannot just pump 4K out of a console without putting the GPU through a lot of work. The upgrades in specs for the Ps4k will be to enable the console to output native 4K quality; whether through Netflix or through a game.

This does not mean that every game will be in 4K either. In the long term developers will be able to make games that will be truly native 4K quality. But in the short term, these specs will allow developers to upscale the games to 4K. I encourage you to do research on the difference between native and upscaling and you can see my logic!

Don’t have a 4K Tv? The PS4.5 or PS4.K will not necessary benefit you. Yes, the PS4K will have better specs but those specs allow the console to output 4K video without straining the existing processing power of the console.

If you have a 4K TV. Then you will definitely want this console! Not only will you be able to play some of your games on that gorgeous display, you will also be able to stream 4K content from Netflix and watch 4K blu-Ray; all on the same device!
