So many things flit through my mind when I think of the word “share”.
We teach our kids to think of others and share their possessions.
But then as adults I think we forget what we taught our kids. Do we practice sharing? or are we looking to see what we can get?
Lately I see countries focusing on what’s best for us, the people. But then what they do is not best for everyone. They forget people — the poor, and unnoticed. The results always seem to be on the side of those who have money.
That’s not fair, is it?
“They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share (1 Timothy 6:18, NIV).”
I would like to think, and I certainly pray that we as Christians start looking towards this scripture.
Are we caring and sharing with others or are we looking to ourselves?
I know I don’t feel as if I am doing enough. I am praying for discernment in this area.
How can I help people help themselves?
I remember one time in church we were being encouraged to give more. (a topic that doesn’t sit very well with many congregants.) But when the presenter put up a graph to show how much we spend to heat our homes per month — and asked if we wanted to warm our hearts the same way — the lightbulb went on.
All of a sudden I saw the need to give more as a portion of what I take in. After all it is all God’s and He has given it to me to look after. From then on my husband and I worked on our budget so that our givings (including to other charities) came off the budget first. Then we lived on what remained.
Instead of God getting the leftovers He got the first fruits.
“Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God (Hebrews 13:16, NIV).”
From that time forward, God has blessed our work. He saw we were willing to give to Him first.
My husband and I also seek projects that will help others make a step towards independence. And we look for those who are spreading His Word.
Certainly sharing His Word has been important to me, ever since I said, “yes” to Jesus. But we also have to share what we have with others.
We certainly don’t need all the stuff we seem to collect, do we?
May I pray for you and me?
Lord Jesus, teach us to share — to open our hearts and our wallets when the time is right. Help us to discern the right way to do this. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
