Beautiful game with a not-so-beautiful ending…

Sea of Stars is a new turn-based RPG that came out in August 2023 on Windows, Nintendo Switch, PS 4, PS 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Developed by Sabotage Studio the game pays homage to good old pixel art JRPGs from the late 90s. I haven’t actually grown up playing any of the games available on Nintendo consoles at that time, but I could tell that the general vibe of the game was supposed to emulate the nostalgic feeling many will remember. Everything, from the combat system to the music score, screams: “90s!”. However, the graphics are, obviously, much better.

I’ve completed the game in a bit over 20 hours, and, despite the title being very well received by the general audience, I do have some issues with it that I want to get into without too many spoilers.

First of all, the premise of the game revolves around the story of a couple of “chosen ones” who must travel far and wide to defeat the great evil. Pretty basic story, but it does, of course, still work. However, the simplicity of the story is what made it very hard to stay invested in it for so many hours.

Sea of Stars has at least 20 hours of purely main story quests without side activities. There are no side quests, extra things to do, events, or content that could help the player take a breather from…
