DIY Projects for Your First Apartment
Decorating your new apartment can be tough. Not only are you working with small spaces, you’re probably working with small budgets. But, Do-It- Yourself (DIY) projects can help you design the space you’ve always dreamed of on a realistic budget. Here are a few DIY projects you can master to make your new apartment the perfect home.
Modernize your furniture
You may think that your old childhood dresser won’t make the cut in your new adult apartment, but a few quick fixes to your piece can make it like new. A fresh coat of paint will not only make it suitable for your new space, it will also remove any minor damages the piece has suffered over the years. Adding new, modern hardware will also restore this piece. Any local hardware store will have a wide variety of knobs and handles to pick from. Choose what best fits your style and design. Refurbishing your old furniture will also save you a ton of money.
Make your own headboard
Old wood makes for a beautiful headboard. After cutting the piece accordingly to fit your space, sand, prime and paint the restored wood for a brand new focal point of your room. For an extra level of flare, use an old mattress pad (or stuffing) and new fabric to cover your piece and match your bedroom décor.
Create a quaint window bench (with storage!)
Take a single row book shelf (like the ones you might find at IKEA or Target) and laying it on its side. You now have a potential window bench. Add a cushion on top for comfort to complete this piece. The single cubby book shelf, now facing the ground, can store books, stationary and other trinkets too, adding storage in addition to functional seating.
Shower curtain curtains
Window pieces can come with a hefty price tag. But fabric shower curtains offer a nice look at a fraction of the price.
Dollar store décor
The dollar store offers you a wide array of décor options when you are designing on a budget. Glass vases, candle holders and even ceramic drinking glasses can be refurbished to create centerpieces and decorations in your home. Upside down wine classes make for seamless candle holders. Glass vases filled with pebbles (also found at the dollar store) create new flower holders. Various ceramic bowls and candle stick holders make for new jewelry storage.
DIY projects are a lifesaver for apartment owners decorating on a dime. With a little creativity and elbow grease, you can create a space that is truly your own.
