Tips for Baby-Proofing Your New Apartment

Before bringing home your new bundle of joy, there are a few things you will want to do to make sure your apartment is safe for a baby. Often, renters are faced with a challenge since they don’t have the ability to make major changes to their space. When preparing for your new baby, here are a few baby-proofing tips to make your apartment is safe:

1. Baby gates are an essential feature when it comes to baby-proofing your place. You don’t want to wait until your little one has begun to crawl or walk. You’ll want to install these gates in your home as soon as possible. Common danger areas include stairwells, bathrooms and laundry rooms. Having these gates in place will give you peace of mind that your baby won’t be able to get into anything that they shouldn’t.

2. Cover all of your outlets with protective coverings. Babies have a natural curiosity to play with anything that can get their hands on. Make sure their precious fingers can’t reach any open electrical outlets by covering each and every electrical outlet in your home.

3. Make sure to cover any sharp edges in your home. Baseboards, coffee tables, furniture edges and shelving units can all lead to potential boo-boos. Place bumper guards or felt liners on corners so you’re ready when your child begins to move around.

4. If you have any hazardous chemicals, move them to higher shelves. Babies have a tendency to play with whatever is at their eye level. Low shelves and cupboards and everything that’s on them can be found and played with by your little one. Move cleaning supplies to safe locations. In addition, buy baby locks for lower cabinets to stop tiny fingers from getting into harmful materials.

5. Keep plants out of reach. This is one that many people don’t typically think of. Houseplants can be toxic when ingested, so it’s important to keep these green leaves out of reach. Plus if the baby spills potting soil, it can be a mess to clean up.

Welcoming a new addition to the family is an amazing milestone for your family. With these helpful tips, you’ll be sure to protect your newest prized possession in your apartment.
