I can’t stand floss. Those dang containers of waxy string, trying to wrap it tightly around my index fingers and then work all the way around my mouth through every tooth space. For years I listened to what the dentist would say, I’d try for a couple days and give up. Only to be bloodied at my next cleaning as the hygienist would have to scrape my plaque away and work around my puffy gums.
Flossing does more than just clean between your teeth. The big difference compared to brushing here is that it works under the gum line to toughen the tissue but also uproot any bacteria or food that’s taking hold. Flossing once a day in addition to twice-a-day brushing results in pale pink, firm gums that resist bleeding from contact and keep a tight seal on teeth to prevent food from getting underneath. This goes a long way to prevent gingivitis without using obnoxious-tasting, chemical-laden mouthwashes. And having nice gums can be a source of pride when it comes time for the cleaning. But none of this is possible if you don’t bother flossing. And if you’re anything like me, the thought of wrapping loose string around your fingers and struggling to keep it tight as you reach the back molars makes you rather face another bloody cleaning instead.
One particularly brutal cleaning brought me to have a conversation with my savior because I thought I was going to bleed to death. It had been a couple years without going to the dentist during college but I had just gotten my own insurance after graduating and getting my first “grownup” job so I was up for a fresh start. I think I was tasting iron and spitting blood for a week after this gentleman hygienist cleaned my lemon Chiclets! I begged for mercy, or at least I think I did before fainting and getting a transfusion (kidding). He told me what I needed to do: floss. I knew that was the answer. He said to start slow, once a week for one week. The next week two days. Then three and four and so on until I made it to every day of the week at the nearly two month mark.
