Diamond Drilling

Why and How of Diamond Drilling Mechanism

Diamonds are the hardest substance known, and can cut the through toughest of surfaces with ease and precision. These qualities of diamond create some other uses of this precious substance. They are made into tools required for hard tasks like drilling into the earth. In the mining industry, Diamond drilling specialists use diamond drill bits to explore minerals. They play an important role in deciding if the site dug is minable.

It’s not gem quality diamonds, but industrial diamonds that are used for this purpose. They are used to make drill bits which form the most significant part of the whole equipment used for diamond cutting services.

Components of the Diamond Drilling Mechanism

The complete diamond drilling system is made up of three parts — rotary drill, the drill rod and the diamond bit. Rotary drill, the major part of the equipment supplies it with power. The drill rod forming the middle part of the machine contains the core obtained from drilling. This core becomes a sample for geological analysis, yielding important information like mineral percentage. On this basis, exploring companies determine whether mining operations should be conducted or abandoned in a specific area. The diamond bit, which is fixed on the last end of the drilling barrel is responsible for clearing the entry into the earth.

The use of diamond, provides accuracy to the drilling process as diamonds being amazingly strong make the drill bits last longer. In addition, the mining process realised with the help of diamond drill bits are free from noise and dust. Light to carry and easily transportable, these equipments can be operated remotely and even under water.

It’s how it works

Talking about its structure again, the drill attaches to itself a drill rod mounted with a diamond drill bit to the end. The drill rotates making the bit penetrate the earth. As the drill rod moves in, core slides in through the hole in the middle of drill bit and keeps sliding up into the rod. This core is contained inside a core tube with a latching system tagged to a cable. This mechanism helps bring core to the surface.

After the first drill bit is submerged into the ground the diamond drilling specialists add another one to the top of it so that deeper penetration could be ensured. Once the drill rods are filled with cores, the operators retrieving them from the ground, store them in the respective boxes designed for the purpose.

Below are some of the merits of this system:
Merits:

1. Drilling is free from noise and dust.
2. Drilling can be performed in a rapid and efficient manner for example, cutting a 4mm hole through a wall in less than a minute.
3. Being light and portable it can be used everywhere from a distance.
4. It is accurate and easy to use.
