On these dark, wintry January days, the BABB team has been knuckling down to deliver some solid progress towards the project goals.

Testing the alpha

The alpha app hit the team’s phones just before Christmas. It’s been really exciting to use it for the first time. We’ve spent a good chunk of this month testing it, finding all the bugs and getting them fixed.

Here’s a sneak peak…

We’re delighted with how it looks and feels, and we’re excited to get the beta app in the hands of the community as soon as possible.

App waiting list at 15k

A huge thank you for joining the waiting list for the app launch, and for sending it out to your friends and family. We’re delighted to say that the viral effect has taken hold and almost 15,000 people have signed up so far.

If you know anyone who would be interested in using the app, please send them to the waiting list to sign up. Launching a new product to the market is all about speed and early traction. It will be incredibly helpful to have thousands of people primed and excited to install the app and start using it.

FStech Awards

We’re really excited to have been shortlisted for an FStech Award in the ‘Blockchain Project of the Year’ category. We’re in great company on the shortlist, alongside established players and other challengers, all of whom are doing innovative work in the space.

The winner will be announced at the awards ceremony on 21st March. You can check out the full shortlist of all the award categories here.

Rushd in Forbes

You might have spotted this interview with Rushd which was published yesterday in Forbes. He speaks at length about BABB’s mission and what we’re doing to advance financial inclusion.

Please help us to ensure that as many people as possible get to read this fantastic article, and share it far and wide.

Rushd at TEDx

Rushd gave a talk at TEDx Sevenoaks School this month, on the theme of “What does the future hold?”. His talk focused on connectivity as the key to making a lasting change to end financial exclusion.

It was a truly stellar line up of speakers, providing fascinating evening of ideas and discussion. We’d like to thank Sevenoaks School for hosting such a fantastic evening. The event was recorded, and a film of his talk is due to be published online in the next few weeks. Watch this space!

Inaugural book swap

This month, we held the first BABB book swap — the team brought in the books they’ve read and loved so that other people can enjoy them too. From The Soul of Money to How to Think Like Einstein, we all got our hands on some pre-loved pearls of wisdom.

Lithuania banking licence application

We are aiming to complete the recruitment of a CEO and Head of Internal Audit for the new Lithuania HQ as soon as possible. We’ve received applications from many highly experienced banking professionals and have started conducting interviews with shortlisted candidates.

We’re hopeful that the recruitment process will soon be complete, allowing us to submit the application for a banking licence in Lithuania.

Introducing: BABB Labs

We’re keen to keep sharing in depth technical report and progress updates with our community. As our audience grows, it is starting to include more and more people who are interested purely in becoming customers of the app.

To make sure everyone continues to get the info they want and need from us, we’ve created BABB Labs, a brand new channel for behind-the-scenes info. If you would like to keep following in-depth progress reports and technical insights, please…

Tech update

Our developers have been working incredibly hard in the last few months, and as a result it’s been a little while since we last brought you a detailed tech update.

Since then, we’ve completed sprints 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, and we’re currently working on sprint 10. Here’s the highlights…

We’ve completed the customer onboarding in iOS and Android, including face recognition biometrics. This is a key element of the product, as the onboarding process is the barrier between the banked and the unbanked; many experience rejection from legacy banks during this phase. However, there are legal requirements and security concerns involved with this step, which is why creating a seamless process within regulatory restrictions can be tricky. Face recognition and voice recognition come handy to reach a reasonable compromise.

We’ve made huge progress in many features, including transaction history and fundraising. The fundraising feature wasn’t initially planned for the first release but has taken centre stage for the launch. We’re very excited about this feature and can’t wait to tell you more about it as we get closer to the launch.

We’re also doing well with integration with core banking services and ‘hidden’ things including transaction monitoring, security and infrastructure expansion.

Sprints 3 & 4

  • Increased security and enabled profile editing and storing of addresses
  • Integrated with 3rd party services for push notifications and emails
  • Completed full regression testing on multiple devices for compatibility and setup of mock environments for parallel testing on different phones
  • Set up different environments for quality assessments and user assessment testing
Sprint 3 burn-down
Sprint 4 burn-down

Sprints 5 & 6

  • Enabled AutoScaling of infrastructure that allows for seamless expansion of capacity in the case of a deluge of new users signing up to the app
  • Enhanced security of environment with VPN and firewalls
  • Developed User Interface kit and established design guidelines
  • Enabled whatsapp messaging in addition to sms notifications
  • Conducted competitive analysis with services provider by our competition
Sprint 5 burn-down
Sprint 6 burn-down

Sprint 7, 8 & 9

  • Established IDScan and automation of testing
  • Started integration with public blockchain and conduit to internal blockchain
  • Completed proposal of security assessment strategy and penetration testing
  • Complete the scheduling of new and editing of existing regular payments for user
  • Completed identity verification, ID type and backside of ID support
Sprint 7 burn-down
Sprint 8 burn-down
Sprint 9 burn-down

See you again next month

This is a time of great change for BABB, and the team is highly focused on achieving our aims. We will continue to publish monthly updates (like this one) but the team won’t be chatting in Telegram. The awesome AmaZix admins will help you with any questions you have. We hope you understand that we need to concentrate our time and energy at this critical time.

We hope you have a great February and we’ll see you again next month.
