This season, BAND went on the look for exceptional young athletes who empower and inspire everyone around them. We asked coaches to tell us about an athlete that has inspired them and the rest of their teams to work harder and push forward in the face of challenges.

We were amazed by the incredible stories that coaches from all over the country sent in about their athletes. The amount of love and passion felt by the coaches who submitted was clear in every entry, and it has been very difficult to narrow down the list of deserving and qualified athletes.

BAND is very pleased to present our Recommended Athlete Scholarship to Tatyana Carter.

Congratulations, Tatyanna!

Based on her skill, sportsmanship, and perseverance, Tatyanna has been awarded the ‘Recommended Athlete’ Scholarship by everyone here at BAND. We hope she continues to uplift her teammates and help them to band together!

Tatyanna Carter is an 8-year-old elite dancer at Shawn’s Dance Studio. She is one of the youngest competitive dancers on the team and holds a national title.

Tatyanna began dancing three years ago. At first, she was only a part of their summer program, but as she started to get more dedicated, she began winning competitions all over Florida with her personality and amazing technique.

When Tatyanna first starting dancing, there were moments where she would blank out and stare off into space. Her teacher wasn’t sure what was going on, but when Tatyana would come back, she wouldn’t remember what she was doing.

Her teacher spoke with her mother and helped them find a diagnosis: Tatyanna suffers from severe epilepsy. On her worst days, Tatyanna can suffer between 10–20 petite mal seizures, where she temporarily blacks out and is unable to process outside information for a few seconds. They are especially aggravated by stress.

Her mom has been extremely supportive and tries to give Tatyana the backbone she needs to excel with dance. Even though she’s a single mom, she’s always there to support Tatyanna with hair and makeup, and calm her down when Tatyana’s getting stressed and frustrated. Seeing her mom’s support helps Tatyana stay motivated and keep on pushing.

While dance choreography is hard enough on its own, Tatyanna’s blackouts would mean that she would often miss out on a handful of steps during class.

For many dancers, this would be so frustrating that they would decide to quit, but Tatyanna’s passion for dance and the support of her peers and teachers at the studio helped her to train. They let her have more time to recuperate after her blackouts and let her compose herself.

Learning the choreography might be a bit slower process, but Tatyanna’s dedication to perfection allows her to keep up with the older girls and enables her to enter competitions together with the rest of the team. The other kids will often stop and help her catch up if they notice she’s missed a few steps.

Stress is much higher during competition season. Back in April 2018, Tatyanna’s seizures reared their head back when the team was preparing for their Nationals competition. After a long day at the studio, Tatyanna was rehearsing a solo when she began to have a seizure just as her music began to start.

They stopped the music and gave her time to recover, but as soon as the music resumed, so too did her seizures. This occurred three times consecutively, but Tatyana was confident that she could still push through and be able to beat it. Until the fourth seizure. At that point, time was not on their side and her instructor had to give other girls a chance. Tatyana was devastated.

Later that same weekend, the team attended the Nationals competition. Against hundreds of other kids, Tatyanna received the highest score with her lyrical solo.

At BAND, we are inspired by Tatyanna’s incredible perseverance and strength. We hope that this scholarship will inspire Tatyanna and everyone at her studio to continue pursuing their dreams and band together!

A great coach inspires their athletes, but great athletes inspire their coaches.
