I think you bring up a really good point. I wasn’t so much responding to the articles themselves as much as I was responding to some patterns I saw in the responses to those articles (on Twitter and Facebook mostly). Hindsight being 20/20, I should’ve taken screen shots to reference, so my post had a clearer context.
My concern was that people were taking those articles, likely just reading the headlines, and then distorting the messages in them to dismiss and ignore an artist, a song, a movement — simply because they didn’t get it or because it made them uncomfortable.
So, I think much of the sentiment in the original articles, in your response, and in my piece are delivering similar messages, if I’m understanding them correctly.
But I guess my broader point, directed mostly toward white people, is two-fold: First, even if you don’t get it, it’s still worth paying attention. And in fact you should pay attention! (“It’s for you…”) But lastly, once you show up to the party, don’t be an asshole. (“…it’s just not about you.”)
