Thank you for reading, Lee. I’m glad you found it informative. If there’s one thing we are constantly aiming for with Rising Young Minds, it’s providing perspective.
Something that always struck me as odd with the Civil War was how much people ignored context and history. Yes, it was about “states’ rights.” But the states’ rights to do what, exactly? Judging by the declarations of secession from South Carolina and Georgia, I think we know the answer already.
We continuously fight over who should be deified versus vilified, and, in doing so, ignore context. Due to emotion, we overlook things — sometimes intentionally, sometimes not. In this case, family history drives the issue (descendants of slaves versus descendants of Confederate soldiers).
But the simple fact remains that the Confederacy was a separatist rebellion against the very nation we consider our home. It doesn’t seem logical that the very government from which those states seceded would celebrate their leaders and soldiers, no?
Anyways, I hope this is the first of many pieces you find useful! Please feel free to share and subscribe!
