It’s funny you mention the education and understanding portion. A recent piece in the Washington Post actually discussed the differences in Civil War education by location. The results are intriguing, but likely line up with expectations.

As I said to Lee, I think most people understand their own perspectives and lack both opposing views and context. Because of that, we lose sight of the “big picture” per se, or of anything outside of “the box.” It’s not a uniquely American problem, but our worldviews tend to be shaped by our exposure — or lack thereof — to various perspectives.
