Paul Ryan: A Poem

As a religious man,
the Speaker must realize
that trading the lives
of American children
for $170K
is a deal only
the devil could make.
He must know.
How could he not?

*

So does he pray his rosary,
confess his donors to a
horrified priest?
Does he baptize himself
anew each week?
And does he ever wonder
what awaits him
on the other side?
Or if the devil will
take his kids in the bargain
like he took those
innocent kids
on Valentine’s?

*

It must be lonely
to be Paul Ryan,
to be so deaf to God,
whose words are
coming now as cries
from the
grieving teens of
Marjory Stoneman
Douglas High.
