Week 4 Interview Skills & Techniques

Finding a job is hard, getting one is even harder! There is a lot of ways to get in as we learned this week, networking, exposure and even hustling. But as soon as you have that foot in the door you have to show what you are made of and the interview does just that. The interviewer will ask you questions about your past jobs, how you work, how you work in a team, how you prefer to work and a lot of others just sussing out your work ethics. But then they will also ask you random nothing to do with the job questions like “What’s the most important part of a sandwich?” Yeah pretty random there are other questions like this that will throw you off but it isn’t meant to, it is actually trying to find out your personality.

They ask you these questions to see how you respond, it lets them see your creative process, how you think and some questions how you can work in a team. Some questions will ask you about your work and this is also targeted at your work ethic with a team or on your own, the interviewer is trying to see if your passionate about your work, to see if you love what you do and understand it in a way that you can describe to a person outside the industry what it is you do. A passionate worker is a hard worker because they love what they do and they will put there work into it.

When I am in a interview I just try to be honest as possible, if my nerves don’t get the better of me I am quite the talker, the mock interview we did in class threw me off, applying for a job that was quite broad and not 100% knowing what it is doesn’t help but also still learning everything i need to apply for that job made it harder. Though I do look forward to future opportunities and hope a question like “How would you fill this room with golf balls?” doesn’t throw me off because who would even do that?
