Disassociate Yourself

Dear Friends:

My thoughts on the Charlottesville events of the weekend:

On July 16, 1964, King released a statement on the Republican presidential nomination of Barry Goldwater. Goldwater campaigned on a new kind of conservatism that was staunchly against civil rights reform and explicitly pro-white.

King believed the candidate legitimized and incited an uptick of white supremacist ideology in the Republican party. King stated:

“The Republican Party geared its appeal and program to racism, reaction, and extremism…On the urgent issue of civil rights, Senator Goldwater represents a philosophy that is morally indefensible and socially suicidal. While not himself a racist, Mr. Goldwater articulates a philosophy which gives aid and comfort to the racist. His candidacy and philosophy would serve as an umbrella under which extremists of all stripes would stand. In the light of these facts and because of my love for America, I have no alternative but to urge every Negro and white person of goodwill to vote against Mr. Goldwater and to withdraw support from any Republican candidate that does not publicly disassociate himself from Senator Goldwater and his philosophy.”

In the wake of the events this past weekend in Charlottesville, I issue the same charge as King: Wherever you confront a philosophy that denies a person’s humanity, openly and assertively disassociate yourself.

If it’s a political faction that wants to deny healthcare to millions of poor and oppressed people in your communities, as if their humanity doesn’t automatically qualify their right to access medicine and services necessary to live: disassociate yourself.

If a friend or family member espouses apathy towards the plight of marginalized and oppressed people in America, openly and assertively disassociate yourself from the idea that you can be silent and helpful to the great cause of equality for all.

Wherever you confront a philosophy like those held dear by the Alt Right, Neo Nazis and the like, disassociate yourself. Affirmatively. It is time for everyone to work towards a solution to America’s great problem!!!

Disassociate yourself and be Loud!
