Toblerone is an internationally recognised and beloved treat. It’s a favourite gift for those who don’t know what to buy and it’s always enjoyed. But although the confection’s mix of milk chocolate, nougat, almonds, and honey is delicious — it’s not one of a kind (Sublime and Kolumbo are two similar chocolates that come to mind).

It’s not the sticky, sweet snack that has made it a worldwide staple or even the name, those are almost just bonuses. What is unique is the bright red and yellow desk name-plate of the package and the mountain range of chocolate it contains.

The recipe was created by one Emil Baumann but it is his cousin, Theodor Tobler, who is the true visionary. Though there is some mystery as to the true inspiration of his tri-sided treasure, the accepted theory is that he saw the Swiss Alps, the Matterhorn specifically, and thought “It is beautiful and iconic, why not have these chocolates of ours pay homage?” And thus, Tobler’s Torrone (a type of nougat) was born!

P.S.Did you ever notice that there is a standing bear hidden in the mountains of the Toblerone logo? I always find it to be a nice surprise when a logo has a clever secret like that!
