What are Medium Writers Talking About? #2

Back in December 2015, I created What are Medium Writers Talking About? #1 and List of Tags . These articles present a number of tables showing what was going on with tags at that time. In response to an article today by Elizabeth Tobey from the Medium staff titled What Medium Readers Are Hungry For I thought I’d update of my tracking information.

The Medium staff have the tools to look at what’s going on, on the Medium site, in many more ways than general members. She present an interesting insight: “For the most popular topics, there are 10 times the number of posts on those topics as followers. For the least, there are 180 followers for every post.” Stated another way, on average, I think this says, for an average group of 180 readers FOLLOWING of a given topic, over the time period of her sample, there were 1800 posts written for “popular” topics but only 1 post for the least popular topics.

If this is a correct interpretation, I think what it is telling us, is what I feel my experience is. I can’t possibly keep up with the number of posts with popular tags. I’m sure I miss or have to pass over most of them. On the other hand, for the less popular topics, I have to purposely seek them out to make sure I didn’t miss the occasional article that gets posted.

Here are some specifics using today’s (4/13/16) tag counts. The “tag label” is the name on the tag. “Tagged posts” means the total number of posts since Medium started using tags up until today, that have been assigned that tag. The “change rate” is the rate Per Month that the tags have increased, on average, over the 3.73 months since my 12/23/15 count.

What does this list tell us?

1. The most popular tags in December are still among the most popular today.

2. The most popular, however, are not always the fastest growers.

3. A good way to view the list is look at a group of tags that have similar growth rates. For example, look at the 52% growth rate group. It has Business, with 24,000 tags and Personal Development with 8700 tags. With similar growth RATES, this means that there were about 3 times as many new business tagged articles in the last 4 months as there were Personal Development articles.

Anyone who wants to play with the numbers more, the tag count on December 23 and the number of tag posts added up to April 13, 2016 can be calculated as follows:

Tags on Dec. 23 = current tagged posts / (Change Rate per month X 3.73)

Tag posts added = current tagged posts — Tags on Dec. 23
