Now Portugal is opening up again to tourists, are you planning a trip? Here are six of the best places to visit in Portugal to inspire your post-lockdown holiday.
🤫 For a secret paradise island, go to Faro. Take a boat to a place known as Ilha Deserta, or ‘deserted island’. Hike along its pretty paths or rent a sunbed on its peaceful beaches. The only building on the island is a solar-powered organic restaurant.
⛱️ For one of the best beaches in Europe, visit Tavira. A short ferry ride from this pretty town is Ilha de Tavira, which has idyllic sands where you can sunbathe while snacking on a freshly made donut (bolinha). Discover the nearby 'anchor cemetery' in the sand dunes ⚓
🛥 To explore incredible rocky scenery by boat visit Lagos. Or you can clamber across the golden clifftops, over its famous beaches and marvel at the natural rock formations. But by sea you can enter the hidden Lagos caves.
😎 For cool and historic neighbourhoods visit Lisbon. The iconic Tram 28 journeys through the Graca, Alfama, Baixa and Estrela districts, where you can hop off for 'miradouro' viewing points. Foodies will love the Time Out food market, while Tasca Do Chico is perfect for fado 🎶
🏰 For fairytale castles, don't miss Sintra. The colourful Palácio da Pena is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it's not the only one. Others include the Quinta da Regaleira which has romantic winding pathways leading to gardens, grottoes and wells 🌿🌸
🍷 For port-tasting, take a trip to Porto. This charming historic city on the Douro River is compact enough to walk around. Cross the bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia for famous port cellars offering tastings and tours. The nearby Garden of Morro has wonderful sunset views 🌇
