Unemployment Journal, Day 4–5

Routine? HAH!

Where I fall off the horse and try to get right back on

Yesterday wasn’t my best day. There were some good points, but from start to finish I had problems. I didn’t keep to my routine. Here’s what happened.

I got a late start on my morning walk, and I had a call coming up at 10AM, so I took a shorter walk that usual. But it wasn’t short enough. As I was coming into the house I saw that I missed a call. The call I thought was at 10AM my interviewer thought was at 9:30. I missed her call by five minutes. Yikes.

By the time I ran back in, sipped some water, and caught my breath, she called back. Thankfully, after a few hurried apologies, the interview went very well. By the end of the call we were discussing bringing me in for an interview. Fingers crossed.

After the call I caught up on some emails, had some more coffee, and then…nothing. I. Did. Nothing.

I have my rationalizations for it. I was tired-I had a lot of trouble sleeping the night before. I’m not entirely sure why, but the fun of not having to go to work everyday is fading into a low-grade panic about money. I’m not at risk of missing any bills anytime soon, but still. It’s been two weeks and I don’t have any in-person interviews scheduled. It’s rough.

So I napped, read, ate, and generally tuned out. Not the best strategy, but that’s what I did.

And today’s routine is trashed anyway. My wife and I are running a 7K tomorrow morning so I’m going to go pick up the race packets. Afterwards, I’m going to take my wife to lunch, then visit my uncle, who’s been sick lately & is home alone. That will eat up most of the day. But I don’t mind.

Falling off the routine happens. I’m glad I didn’t fall off it completely. I got my walks in today and yesterday, I’m writing this today, and I’ve done some job stuff. The house isn’t any cleaner, and there’s so much more I can and probably should be doing on the job and writing fronts, but here I am. I’m going to get back on the horse on Monday.

Yee-hah.

(ICYMI: Day 3, Day 2, Day 1.)
