Race Update: New Jersey Governor

The race to succeed Chris Christie as New Jersey governor has been overshadowed by recent elections in Georgia and Virginia but New Jersey voters did go the polls in June to select their party nominees. The result: Democratic nominee Phil Murphy will face off against Republican Kim Guadagno in the fall. The primary contest was labeled the most expensive race in New Jersey history, with total spending topping $42 million.

The semi closed primaries, in which a voter not affiliated with a party may choose which party’s primary he or she wishes to vote in, took place on June 6, 2017. The general election will take place on November 7. Check out information on the candidates below.

Candidate Name: Phil Murphy

Party Affiliation: Democrat

Current Job: Former Goldman Sachs executive and ambassador to Germany under the Obama Administration

Education: University of Pennsylvania (MBA), Harvard University (BA)

Campaign Themes: Phil Murphy has called gun violence an epidemic “nothing short of a public health crisis.” He is a proponent of economic policies that work to invest in New Jersey’s infrastructure to improve public transportation and highways. He also plans to expand the state’s support for a child and caregiver tax credit. He seeks to to create a school system that focuses less on standardized tests and more on the needs of children in the classroom.

Endorsements: Health Professionals and Allied Employees, Laborers International Union of North America, Former Vice President Joe Biden, Senator Cory Booker

Candidate Name: Kim Guadagno

Party Affiliation: Republican

Current Job: Lieutenant Governor

Education: American University JD, Ursinus College (BA)

Campaign Themes: Kim Guadagno is committed to making New Jersey a more veteran friendly state. She plans to evaluate services provided to female veterans and explore property tax relief options for non-combat veterans. Guadagno plans to honor pension commitments to current retirees. She remains committed to improving education by expanding vocational schools and increasing school choice throughout the state.

Endorsements: Republican State Senators Diane Allen, and Jennifer Beck, State Assembly members Rob Clifton and Ron Dancer
