How r/oculus Helped Me Build a Better VR Experience
Two weeks ago I shared Colosseum VR to the VR community on r/oculus, here is the link to the initial post.
As you can see, a lot of users shared their feedback that proved to be very valuable and I wanted to share how we improved Colosseum VR using those advices.
Lightings & Shadows
To start, u/senorotis had some advices about lighting:

So we worked on it and using some baked lighting techniques from Unity we were able to improve lightings a lot, let’s check.

These are some screenshots of the Colosseum VR experience before and after our improvements. As you can see, lightings effects have been rebuilt entirely and the results are encouraging.
The intro
u/j_moute was concerned about the intro that wasn’t immersive enough:

And he wasn’t the only one, u/dboxvr also had some remarks about the intro, and especially about the Gladiator video that we were using in the introduction of the experience.
In the new version of the experience, the introduction is 100% new, we tried to make it more immersive and interesting for the user, here are some screenshots:

Has you can see, the user is not place in an empty world with only a few screens as it was before but in Unimersiv’s “Time Machine” that is much more immersive.
Graphic Quality
Some users were concerned about the graphic quality of the experience, u/senorotis was the first to comment about it:

The comment is not the most delicate of all but it was still valuable.
The most difficult part in the development of VR experiences is that we are very limited to the kind of assets we can use in our game/experience because it’s crucial to keep a 75FPS indicator.
We took a lot of time to improve our assets and to optimize them to make the experience as immersive as possible, here are some screenshots of the results:

Has you can see we tried to add a lot more details to our scene to make it better.
Meet Uni
Finally, we wanted to make the experience as educational as possible so we added Uni, a robot that will teach you everything there is to know about the ancient Roma. We are thinking about using it in all of our educational experiences. Here it is:

If you are interested in trying the new version of our demo, you can download it here. As always, we will be very happy to listen to your feedback!
