Cup Final — Barnard Castle under 17s v Saltburn under 17s

Admirably led by Joe Toulson in his last match as a junior, Barnard Castle under 17s won the NYSD Junior cup on Sunday. As south champions they defeated the north champions, Saltburn in an engrossing match.

Toulson’s innings of 48 in a crucial third wicket partnership of 50 with Finn Usher, was instrumental in rescuing the innings. When Barney lost two early wickets it needed calm heads and Toulson and Usher provided them, both playing some lovely off side strokes.

It enabled Sean Heyes and Jake Black to indulge in some big hitting at the end which gave Barney a solid total. Saltburn were always in the hunt but all seven bowlers used by Barney were commendable in their way.

Black, also playing his final junior match, made the breakthrough, Usher was as usual teasingly accurate and wily with his spin, Tom Merryweather and Alex Pearson supplied a cutting edge at the start and the end.

Barnard Castle 130 for 6 (J Toulson 48, S Heyes 29, F Usher 26, J Black 11no), Saltburn 120–9 (O Tennant 26, J Chisholm 22, F Usher 2–22, A Pearson 2–20). Barney won by 10 runs
