A new study, funded by the California Health Care Foundation, has found that the BeMe app, a mental health platform designed by and for teens, positively impacts young people’s lives. In partnership with Stanford University, the evaluation involved over 13,000 teens nationwide accessing the BeMe app.

The results, published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research mHealth and uHealth (JMU), showed that many teens who were feeling down or anxious turned to BeMe for help and used the supportive media platform about eight times a month. Many of the teens reported the digital content and activities helped them feel more hopeful, boosted their self-esteem, and helped them cope better with challenging emotions.

The study also found that BeMe’s text-based coaching was helpful in dealing with stress. Plus, the interactive skills like puzzles and exercises to promote wellbeing were great for handling strong emotions. Girls and younger teens found the platform especially engaging.

“Our initial findings demonstrate that a large number of teens engaged with the BeMe platform, including its content, mood assessments, interactive skills, and live coaching. Digital tools such as BeMe have the potential to substantially enhance access to mental health support for young people.”

— Dr. Judith Prochaska, Professor in the Department of Medicine at Stanford University with the Stanford Prevention Research Center

This news comes at a crucial time, as many teenagers in the U.S. are struggling with their mental well-being. Sadly, too many young people feel sad or hopeless, and there’s a serious shortage of mental health professionals to help them. This is a big problem, not only for the well-being of individuals but also for the country’s economy. Mental health challenges in families and schools can be costly, and we must find ways to support teens better.

The BeMe platform was designed with input from over 130 teens, making it fun, safe, and easy to use. It offers coaching, crisis support, and connections to licensed therapists so teens can get the help they need whenever needed. Plus, BeMe uses scientifically proven methods like cognitive behavioral therapy to provide top-notch support.
