Fused glass designs custom crafted for Saratoga Automobile Museum’s exhibit

NEW YORK, N.Y. (April 3, 2018) — The Saratoga Automobile Museum (“SAM”) has awarded unique art glass trophies as part of its featured exhibition at the 2018 New York International Auto Show. The visually stunning trophies were made by New York glass artist Mary Cathryn Catherman, whose studio is near Rochester, N.Y.

The art glass trophies are part of the “Park Avenue Concours,” SAM’s display of spectacular antique, classic and race cars at this year’s auto show, on now at the Javits Center in Manhattan. The trophies were awarded to the following cars: 1972 Lamborghini Miura SV, 1938 Bugatti Stelvio cabriolet, 1931 Duesenberg Derham Tourster dual cowl phaeton, 1931 Stutz LeBaron convertible Victoria, 1929 Packard hillclimb racecar, 1967 Bizzarrini P538 racecar, and the 1994 Cosworth/Lola which was Mario Andretti’s last IndyCar racer, and was given to Andretti by Hollywood legend Paul Newman when Andretti retired from racing with the Newman Haas race team. SAM’s exhibit of these rare and beautiful cars has attracted crowds of spectators eager to see examples of great automotive designs of the classic era.

Mary Cathryn Catherman, the proprietor of Mary’s Contemporary Creations, has won several awards for her excellence in glass art. Catherman designed and created each of these glass trophies in different colors and textures for the display’s award-winning cars and each was made uniquely and specifically for each car, using the multi-colored glass panels and mirrors that reflect ambient light through the colored glass.

Her glass designs are made of clear and colored glass fragments that are heated at over 1,500 degrees Fahrenheit to fuse the glass pieces together into a single panel. After staged cooling over a 24 hour period to prevent cracking, the panels emerge as the beautiful glass pieces being displayed.

Saratoga Automobile Museum’s exposition in the New York International Auto Show runs from March 30 through April 8 at the Javits Center in Manhattan. For more information about the Saratoga Automobile Museum, visit saratogaautomuseum.org.
