Esplanade made possible through $3.1 million in state grant support

RENSSELAER, N.Y. (July 13, 2018) — The City of Rensselaer announced the completion of its new waterfront esplanade, a $3.1 million public works project that provides public access to the Hudson River waterfront and flexible recreation space.

The 1,000 ft. long esplanade provides sweeping views of the Albany skyline and is a strategic infrastructure investment that looks to encourage additional development along the Rensselaer riverfront. The esplanade is located adjacent to deLaet’s Landing, a $20 million-plus transformational project led by Troy-based U.W. Marx that will add 96 market-rate residential units, in addition to commercial opportunities.

Funding for the esplanade project was made possible by the New York State Department of State’s Office of Planning, Development & Community Infrastructure, with $2.5 million for construction and $642,500 in design.

“We are so excited to finally open the esplanade to the public. This project has been one of my top priorities for my administration. So now, to see it come to fruition is truly incredible. The opportunities it will bring for the city are countless, and I can’t wait to watch the city continue to grow,” said Rensselaer Mayor Daniel Dwyer.

“New York State is honored to be a part of this proud moment in Rensselaer’s history. This revitalization project, while certainly aesthetically beautiful, builds upon the important and tangible role that the Hudson River serves in Rensselaer’s culture. The waterfront esplanade, which New York State was proud to support, also provides critical infrastructure that will ensure the shoreline remains a community highlight for generations to come. Congratulations to the planners and leaders in Rensselaer for making this important project a reality,” said New York State Secretary of State Rossana Rosado.

When fully realized, this new 1.5 acre park will have full vehicular access, offer recreational opportunities, a bike path, and potential to hold outdoor concerts and events.

“I am incredibly pleased to see the completion of the Rensselaer Riverfront Esplanade Community project, which is reinventing Rensselaer’s waterfront. There is tremendous value the waterfront development and this project is part of the long term plan for reimagining the Hudson River waterfront. The project was made possible was state support and it is a key investment for the community,” said Assemblymember John T. McDonald III.

“Rensselaer County has some of the best views and access to the Hudson River anywhere in New York State. We are fully supportive of projects that help reconnect our residents with this mighty and historic river. The Rensselaer Riverfront Esplanade is a great project that will provide access to the river and recreational opportunities for generations to come,” said Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin.

“Rensselaer is a strong, close-knit community. The opening of the waterfront esplanade will give the people of the city yet another thing to be proud of. The esplanade is the perfect outdoor space to spend time with family and friends,” said Rich Mooney, president of the Rensselaer City Council.

“The esplanade will be a great place for the people of Rensselaer to go. It offers scenic views and stellar greenspace. The best part is, this is only the beginning. We are reviewing different proposals for projects all over the city. The esplanade helps support our vision,” said Charles Moore, director of planning and development for the City of Rensselaer.

“We congratulate the City of Rensselaer on the completion and grand opening of its beautiful waterfront Esplanade. The transformation of this space not only helps revitalize this area of redevelopment but creates a strong quality of life within the city where residents can work, live and play as well as become a new destination for visitors to enjoy the Hudson River from Rensselaer County,” said Kate Manley, president of the Rensselaer County Chamber.
