How is it possible to write a tremendously long story with dozens of references to female directors and not even mention Penny Marshall, who has directed bigger hits than Heckerling (Big, League of Their Own), more accomplished box office failures (Renaissance Man, The Preachers Wife, Riding in Cars With Boys), yet similar to Heckerling hasn’t directed a motion picture since 2001? There’s no question it’s harder to get more chances as a female or minority. But it’s rare for any director, male or female, to get more chances after several straight failures. That she’s so dismissive of television or streaming opportunities appears to make her out of step with the realities of the profession and her own track record.
