Betsy DeVos Quest to End the Public Education System
On July 6th, 2017, Npr wrote an article to inform the public that there are 19 states collectively suing Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. The suit accuses DeVos of breaking the federal law that was put in place by the Obama Administration last November. The law protects college students found to be fraudulent to get their loans forgiven if a for profit school violates consumer protection laws.
The rule was put on hold in June, not even a month after DeVos said her agency would re-examine it. The states say DeVos moved too quickly to squash the rule and did so without public input. Especially when compared with the rule’s excess of public hearings that began in September 2015.
Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey stated in a news release about Thursday’s court filing: “Her decision to cancel vital protections for students and taxpayers is a betrayal of her office’s responsibility and a violation of federal law. We call on Secretary DeVos and the U.S. Department of Education to restore these rules immediately.”
“These rules served as critical protections against predatory for-profit schools that exploit hardworking students — students who are simply trying to invest in their own education and future,” added New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. He further stated, “When Washington abdicates its responsibility to protect New Yorkers, we won’t hesitate to step in.”
Secreatry Devos was Trump’s Cabinent pick for Secretary of Education and has been a very controversial pick from the beginning. Her nomination was finally passed by a tie vote from Mike Pence, VP. Secretary DeVos has never sent her own children to Public School and would also like to end the public school system permanently replacing it instead with Charter schools. Her efforts to steamroll the Borrowers Defense Rule without consulting the public sector, are just another example of how she does not have the Amercian folks best interests at heart. Instead, she is perfect for Trump’s Cabinent as she wants to strip away Special Needs Rights, LGBT rights, and school lunches (Daily Kos).
Education Votes is another source advocating to stop DeVos’s School vouchers as they harm students. They are sending out interent petitons to halt her in her tracks. Per Education Votes, The Trump DeVos budget also cuts $ 148,ooo from Carrer and Technical Education Schools.
Betsy DeVos, if not forced to resign, should be a large ongoing part of the Reistance’s efforts to keep democracy in America safe and let people schoose the form of education they want; not be mandated by the Government.
Betsy DeVos’s education plan will undermine opportunites for a free education of our choosing if her reforms are imposed on America.
