Tired of plucking your eyebrows into oblivion? How about having to draw them on every morning? Maybe you’ve even thought about going the more permanent route with an eyebrow tattoo or transplant. Well, microblading may just be your best option. This technique, officially referred to as 3D Microblading or Eyebrow Embroidery uses a special blade to insert small hair-like strokes into the client’s eyebrows.
Phaedra Williams, an LA-based professional makeup artist and licensed aesthetician, shared some of her expertise on the technique. “It’s fairly new to the United States. It originated in Asia,” Williams told BeautyLynk.

Williams currently charges $399 for her microblading services — which ranges from $350 to $800. “I want it to be affordable for your everyday average woman,” Williams says. So far, she has received great clientele feedback, “They’re excited. They love it. I’ve been getting a huge response from the service, especially on my social media.”
Here are 5 reasons you may want to try out this trendy technique for yourself:
- Durability. Brow gels and powders can wipe off at any unsuspecting moment. Microblading results are long-lasting and durable against face-wiping, swimming, and sweating. According to Williams, the technique will last you anywhere from eight to ten months up to two years.
- Low Maintenance. Another option is an eyebrow transplant or a Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT). This procedure takes a four-inch wide strip of scalp from the back of client’s head. Individual hairs are then plucked from the removed scalp and placed onto the eyebrow. Besides costing thousands more than microblading, FUTs are fairly high maintenance. The average eyebrow hair grows flat on the face. Since the transplanted follicles are taken from the head, they grow outward, away from the face. To resemble normal brows, transplanted hair needs to be trimmed and trained every few days or so. In comparison, microblade brows require very little maintenance to stay flawless.
- Nice and subtle. To all MUAs who prefer a more natural makeup routine, microblading gives a very subtle brow. “People tend to like [microblading] because it’s natural-looking as opposed to the tattoo brows that they did back in the 80’s and the 90’s,” Williams explained. Microblade brows also appear more natural than the popular powder or ‘Instagram’ brows.
- Short recovery process. Applying a sharp blade to your eyebrows may sound quite painful. To avoid discomfort, technicians apply a numbing cream to the the eyebrow area. Invasive procedures like FUTs take weeks to fully recover and see results. Microblade patients will most likely recover from their procedure in a few days.
- Build-a-Brow. With the client’s consent and feedback, microblade technicians provide each client with their own, recommended brow shape. No need to guess which arch fits your face, “we go in and we basically restructure the whole eyebrow,” said Williams. “Sometimes I can spend almost 45 minutes to an hour just reshaping.” The procedure is typically 2 hours long.
