The Evolution of Hair and Makeup in Soul/Hip Hop
The VH1 Hip Hop Honors gave all of us life last night. The bold fashion, raw performances, and impactful honorees left all of us raising our fists in pure pride.
In “honor” of the VH1 Hip Hop Honors, VH1 posted a video giving some cool insight into the evolution of hip hop dance. Besides fresh moves, we also get to see how style and fashion has changed. Hip hop has not only had a huge impact on black culture and attitude, it has also influenced hair and makeup within the black community. From the afro-rocking Soul Train days to the recent resurgence of cornrows, there has been an interesting evolution of beauty trends in Hip Hop.
Join us on a walk down memory lane and check how hair and makeup has changed (or even repeated itself) over the years.
70s
Chaka Khan’s minimal makeup and effortless fro were pretty common during her day.

On the other side of the spectrum, icons like Tina Turner often wore big hair and a bold red lip.

80s
Can we say big hair! Back in the 80s, soulful artists like Whitney Houston did not hold back on the blush and eyeshadow.

Who can forget Ms. Jackson’s Birth of a Nation look. We absolutely adore the voluminous 80’s hair and dramatic eyes.

90s
TLC’s unique style took 90’s hair and makeup to a new level. Their natural beauty called for minimal makeup. The CrazySexyCool group also stood out for their playful hairstyles.

If you’re like me, you absolutely LOVED Moesha..more officially known as Brandy Norwood. Brandy’s sleek box braids and soft, natural makeup were also a staple 90’s look.

Early 2000's
The talented E-V-E has been a strong female rap artist for over a decade. Her edgy look shows the bold sassiness that defines the early 2000’s Hip Hop era.

Alecia Keys not only changed the game with her melodious, raspy voice, but also for her urban chic braids. If anyone comes to mind when we think of early 2000’s style, it is the piano-playing Keys.

2016
Although she started off with colorful wigs and makeup, Nicki Minaj has gone back to the basics. The top female hip hop artist now rocks long black hair and a more bronzy face.

If you are living on this planet, you most likely know every move that Beyoncé Knowles makes. The Queen B is constantly reinventing her sound and look. Recently, Beyoncé has brought back the early 2000’s vibe with her stylish cornrows.
