Income Vs Art

In this weeks CIU111 lecture we talked about the variety of whys we could earn incomes within our creative fields. Being in the creative industry allows for numerous opportunities to seek payment in different ways. I’ll be discussing the income options for employees rather then freelance work.

This quote is exactly how I feel when it comes to my career, money isn't the be all and end all for me. Why spend two thirds of your life doing something that makes you miserable? Being and employee does give you the stability of a regular paycheck but ultimately you may have very little to do with the overall creative process.

Here are some Pros & Cons for being an employee;

Pros - Stable Job/Work hours, meeting and networking with fellow employees and new clients, Money stability, have a life outside of work, stress levels lower.

Cons - Workflow is being told what to do essentially, Not always in contact with the clients or contacts, Not in control of the project you're working on.

Melanie Connellee, executive coach and president of business consulting company MLC Group said that to turn something you love into a business, you have to determine how to make money from it. “Spend some time brainstorming,” said Connellee. “Look at it from several avenues — from your perspective, from the buyer’s perspective, the end user’s perspective and the audience perspective.” Being in the creative industry, we’re making and creating things for ourselves as well as possible fans and target audiences.
