On today’s show we sit down for a very personal conversation with Simplus CEO Ryan Westwood. Ryan is an entrepreneur’s entrepreneur. He exudes passion like Uber raises billion dollar rounds. It’s awe-inspiring, exhilarating, and never-ending. He’s a serial entrepreneur, meaning he’s founded a number of successful companies, and he’s just an all around good guy.

Ryan and I come from similar working class backgrounds, which may be why I like the guy so much. Or maybe it’s just because of his willingness to help foster Utah’s startup ecosystem by mentoring up-and-coming entrepreneurs and leading the Utah Venture Entrepreneur Forum back to prominence. Whatever the case, you won’t find a more passionate and giving entrepreneur in all of Utah.

In July of 2015, Simplus raised a $4.2M seed round led by Utah-based EPIC Ventures. Also participating in the round was kind of a who’s who of Utah tech including Domo CEO Josh James, Vivint CEO Todd Pedersen, Skullcandy founder Rick Alden, Workfront CEO Eric Morgan, and Mercato Partners founders Greg Warnock and Alan Hall.

It’s hard to find an entrepreneur in Utah more respected than Ryan Westwood. His contagious energy, passion, and love for what he does creates a lot of allies, which was evident when this seed round was announced. In fact, when I broke the funding story on Beehive Startups our readers didn’t know much about Simplus, so I wrote, “Simplus was founded by Ryan Westwood. As someone who knows Ryan well, I’m tempted to just drop the mic on this story right here because he and the rest of his team are the only piece of evidence I need to place before a jury to prove Simplus is worth the $4.2M it just received.”

A little verbose, sure, but more than 6 months later I stand by it.
