It Doesn’t Deserve the Name “America”

Looks like bad beer is bad beer regardless of what you call it. And in this case, it’s Budweiser who doesn’t even deserve the name “America” with its latest failure. This past May, BeerTv wrote an article addressing Budweiser’s temporary name change to “America” until the end of November 2016. Although this originally appeared to be an act of political patriotism regarding the upcoming election, this was nothing more than a foreign-based big beer company attempting to rouse Americans to do as they pleased.

Budweiser played on our emotions to in an attempt to buy beer based on patriotic pride rather than flavor. Most of us knew rice-flavored “Buttweiper” would still taste like the same yellow fizzed garbage, regardless of what they called it. But as craft beer enthusiasts, we still had our doubts on the potential Budweiser had regarding their name change.

Good news everyone! Turns out Budweiser’s efforts were worthless as a new poll of 16,000 adults 21 and older found their ad awareness to peak at 16% on June 1 to promptly fall to 11% around the end of July. This hype behind the “America” name change lasted less than 2 months; this drop may be the result of understanding Budweiser is still garbage or the fact that AB InBev, the parent company of Budweiser, are a Belgium-based company attempting to take advantage of American pride. Either way, AB InBev has no right to be called ANYTHING American, let alone “America.”

America is the land of the free, the home of the brave, and back to back World War Champs, so why on Earth would a foreign beer company be allowed to name their beer “America” let alone then promptly fail at doing so?!? Call it karma, but I feel all craft enthusiasts smile knowing Budweiser’s campaign took a quick negative marketing turn. AB InBev might be everywhere, but it sure is heck won’t be known as “America” after this.

So thank you to all who didn’t succumb to Budweiser’s scheme on playing on our patriotism; you are a true American. Let’s hope those percentages continue to dive further and further down as AB InBev realizes you can’t mess with American pride and hope to come out ahead.
