Thanks, Ron. Sorry we haven’t been seeing you around as much but I do fully support the idea of having an offline life (maybe I’ll even try it someday).

Your intuition about high heels being as much about the auditory effect as the visual is, I think, correct. Georgi Boorman and I were actually just talking about that, although in a more positive context than yours.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again- double standards are a two-way street in our society, but at the moment we seem intent on only seeing one set of them. Personally I think that to some extent they will always exist, and I’ve always been more the type to figure out how to get the job done around them. I’ve worked in environments that were predominantly women, and environments that were predominantly men. They each have different power dynamics, which, it should be pointed out, can be used on members of the same sex as well as the opposite sex (if you think men are the only ones who get cowed by the click of an angry alpha female’s stilettos, think again). With both sexes, I’ve found that the ones most intent on power-signalling were the least effective leaders and workers. I’ve seen it and inwardly rolled my eyes at it in both sexes.
