I think that’s the big question, and I’m not sure what the answer is.
If you want to make great content, then you have make great content. Unfortunately, the deck’s stacked against you because that’s not what people are necessarily wanting to consume. They want 6 quick tips. So what I do is:
1) Create the content I want to create anyway, builda small audience, and treat that audience the way I want to be treated — I probably won’t get rich, but it’s better to have 10 diehard fans that 10,000 fans only interested in cheap garbage.
2) Do the things you wish people would do for me — eg I try to financially support the podcasts I listen to and blogs I read whenever possible. Obviously my actions are just a drop in the bucket, but if enough people try to make this change — to supporting creators they love, perhaps we can start a small revolution.
