The Truth About Blogging

Personally, this is great timing.

I’ve always heard that same advice — don’t use platforms you don’t own. But I’ve started directing my traffic to Medium and seen a HUGE payoff. My latest article has gotten 1K+ reads when normally I’d get 50 on my own blog for the exact reason you outlined — on Medium, people want to read. They’re coming hear to find great writing. My personal blog is NOT a destination. Medium is.

Sure, I’m giving Medium free content, but they’re giving me 950 extra readers — some of whom join my email list or make it back to my site who’d never heard of me before.

It’s not a one or the other thing though — I post my article on Medium and share the Medium link, but you can find the same article on my site (for SEO, for posterity, for if Medium shuts down tomorrow). There’s no reason not to post in both places. But I could spend all day optimizing my blog and not see the same results from just getting my normal fans to recommend my story on Medium.
