Almost everybody has been in the situation at a job interview where you get asked “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?”; I always think it’s a trick question that is begging for a “Doing great things for this company!” answer, but after watching Brandon Hay’s talk at Ruby Conf 2015, I really started thinking about it in a different way than usual; I was thinking not only about the where I want to be, but also the how I’m going to get there.
In his talk, he describes all these different career paths for developers, and how each one suits a specific personality, and there’s one that really stood out to me over the rest, the path of the Chief Architect (sounds super fancy right?).
According to Hay’s, this is the kind of person that wants to teach those around them how to build great things, solve difficult problems, and build great software that has real application and longevity. This person has a high skill level, is very education oriented, and understands that they have a great potential to help others become better.
Although (currently) I’m at the Jr. Developer stage, I can see myself going down this path. One of my other great passions is Strength Development and Nutrition, topics that I have already studied for years and have a good amount of knowledge and experience. And I can without a doubt say nothing satisfies me more than being able to have a positive impact on someones life and teach them to become the best version of themselves.
Now with software development I can bring all those ideas I’ve had about these topics to life, and hopefully helping a lot of people along the way.
I’m very excited for the future.
