THAI TEAR-JERKER BREAKS RECORDS: ‘HOW TO MAKE MILLIONS BEFORE GRANDMA DIES’ CONQUERS SINGAPORE
A Heartfelt Story Captivates Audiences and Dominates the Box Office
Thai film “How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies” isn’t just breaking box office records; it’s breaking hearts and leaving audiences in tears. Since its release on May 30, the movie has generated S$1.77 million in just 11 days, making it the highest-grossing Thai film in Singapore’s history.
Box Office Triumph
Golden Village announced on June 10 that this emotionally charged movie raked in S$1.16 million during its second weekend alone. It surpassed the earnings of well-known Thai horror films such as “The Coffin” (2008) and “Shutter” (2004), earning its place at the top.
Currently, it stands as the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2024 in Singapore, trailing only behind local favourites like “Money No Enough 3” and Hollywood blockbusters including “Kung Fu Panda 4” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.”
A Story That Touches the Heart
The plot revolves around M, a young man from Thailand who dreams of becoming a professional gamer. He abandons his ambitions for a get-rich-quick scheme: caring for his ailing grandmother to inherit her million-dollar fortune. This touching narrative is brought to life by director Pat Boonnitipat in his first feature-length film.
Starring the popular Thai singer Putthipong Assaratanakul, also known as Billkin, and 78-year-old debut actress Usha Seamkhum, the film delivers powerful performances that resonate with viewers of all ages.
Studio’s Gratitude
Jina Osothsilp, CEO of Thai studio GDH, expressed profound appreciation for the film’s warm reception in Singapore. “Thank you so much for your warm welcome and for spreading the word, helping make this film the highest-grossing Thai movie in Singapore. It means a lot to us that this multigenerational story, which highlights family bonds and gratitude, has touched your hearts just as it has in Thailand. Looking ahead, we promise to continue producing films that you will love,” she said.
Emotional Impact and Social Media Buzz
Known for its emotional depth, the film has become infamous for leaving audiences in tears. This phenomenon has sparked a viral TikTok trend where viewers document their emotional reactions before and after watching the movie. One video was even captioned, “Running over to hug my Grandma now!”
“How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies” is more than just a film; it’s an emotional journey that stays with you long after the credits roll. It’s no wonder it has captivated Singaporean audiences and set new box office records.
The film is currently showing in cinemas.
