Millennials For Revolution Endorses Brooklyn District Attorney Candidate Marc Fliedner

Fliedner has a record of equal justice — vows to end corruption under acting DA Eric Gonzalez’ current administration in September 12 Brooklyn DA race

Right now, thousands of young people are sitting in jail for non-violent offenses, simply because they could not afford bail. Often times, the criminal justice system keeps these people in a cycle of debt & jail. Kalief Browder committed suicide because he sat in Riker’s for three years for allegedly stealing a backpack— simply because he couldn’t afford bail for a low-level offense.

The toy gun shooting death of Nicholas Heyward Jr, killed by NYPD in the 90’s, foretold of the obstacles facing the Black Lives Matter Movement. Marc Fliedner lead the case that the Civil Rights Bureau re-opened, and is endorsed by the family of Nicholas Heyward, Jr.

We believe Brooklyn District Attorney candidate Marc Fliedner can change this — his call to end cash bail would affect the lives of countless young people, people of color, and working class people throughout Brooklyn and New York City.

Marc Fliedner has called to end broken windows policing, taken a strong stance against using condoms for evidence, and called out his opponent Eric Gonzalez for accepting donor cash from the bail bond industry.

Fliedner’s first case as head of the Civil Rights Bureau was prosecuting a hate crime against Linda Sarsour in Bay Ridge.

Fliedner is the only candidate in recent history (or anywhere in the US, for that matter) to prosecute a police officer for the killing of an unarmed black civilian, when in 2016 he successfully won the conviction against NYPD officer Peter Liang for the 2014 killing of Akai Gurley. Gurley’s family has endorsed Fliedner.

When District Attorney Ken Thompson, as well as current acting DA Eric Gonzalez, decided the Brooklyn DA’s office would not recommend jail time for Liang, or go after any other officers, either in the Akai Gurley case or for the next six months after the conviction, Fliedner resigned in disgust. Fliedner’s principles are in the right place, and we believe this move proves that his ethics are unshakeable.

Fliedner boldly calls out the Prison Industrial Complex in his home state, and has called for NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio to follow through on his word to close Riker’s.

Fliedner is the first openly gay male DA candidate anywhere in the country, and his record as a civil rights attorney shows his dedication to the under-represented and under-served members in his community.

Fliedner is also an active member of Democratic Socialists of America.

The King’s County District Attorney’s office is one of the largest in the country, and can set an example for the rest of the US, not only in how it chooses to prosecute cases, but also in how it looks and acts towards its community. Fliedner’s call to represent women, people of color, and the LGBTQ community, with a priority of fostering trans leadership and cultural competency in his administration, is how every DA’s office should be run across the country. Brooklyn has the opportunity to lead the country by electing Marc Fliedner.

Much like Philadelphia District Attorney Candidate Larry Krasner, both candidates are fighting to re-imagine the role of the prosecutor in their upcoming elections. Krasner in Philadelphia and Fliedner in Brooklyn would be a powerful antidote to the Trump administration’s attack on America’s most vulnerable citizens, and a call to restoration of equal justice. Or should we say, actual progress in the continuing, and always fierce pursuit of equal justice.

Most importantly, Fliedner is the only candidate speaking to the black community in Brooklyn by emphatically declaring #BlackLivesMatter. We truly believe Marc Fliedner is the best candidate for District Attorney in Brooklyn, and Millennials for Revolution endorses Marc Fliedner for Brooklyn District Attorney.
