How we made $10,000 in 13 hours on Kickstarter (Part 2of 2)
Lesson 5: Getting customers more deeply invested by using story.
The reason I was even part of the team had everything to do with storytelling. My job was basically to help tie all the loose ends together and to make it into easily digestible story that also tugged on the heartstrings. My background in advertising and my current passion for screenwriting came together in lovely way to help solve difficult problems like one we had with story. We went through many iterations to get to point where we felt we had the right balance of story and and facts. Story is meaningful and that helped us connect better with our customers.
Lesson 6: “It’s going to change the way we wash.”
Not only was it a great tagline but it was also a great insight. Improve the lives our customers — it was that simple and yet when we were in the preproduction process we were completely stumped, we wanted an idea that would convey everything this product stood for, once again luck would be on our side when had the idea of asking my friend Jerome, a very talented filmmaker for his feedback on what we could do to improve our video pitch and without missing
a beat he gave us the answer, he told us we need to focus on the idea around one of our taglines, “It’s going to change the way we wash.” Boom! Just like that we refocused our efforts and rewrote our scripts.
Bonus Lesson: Leave them wanting more.
We delivered a great product but also left enough room to improve. People will never be 100% satisfied with anything no matter how great the product is, knowing this we made it work to our advantage by building it into our campaign process rather than offering too many options, we started off with just one,Unscented. Once the goal of $10,000 was reached we made our next goal lavender available if if we made it to our next goal of $20,000 — and you get the picture.
