Best Sushi of YVR

Still discovering these as there are sooo many in this city. Here are my favourite ones so far…

Hoshi Sushi @ West Broadway & Macdonald st.

  • Price: $
  • Yay’s: Cheap — I got 6 tuna rolls, 6 salmon rolls, 6 cucumber rolls, a miso soup and green tea for $7.95. The service is great and very quick
  • Nay’s: You get what you pay for — the rolls could have been rolled tighter so that they stayed rolled and don’t fall apart on the plate… aka attention to detail could have been better executed.
  • Overall Score: 3/5

ShuRaku @ Granville st. & Georgia st.

  • Price: $$
  • Yay’s: The sushi was very fresh and delicious. Probably my favourite so far for taste, price and environment.
  • Nay’s: Service was a bit slow — took a while to get water and tea, but our waitress was very friendly.
  • Overall Score: 4.5/5

Momo @ Water st. & Richards st.

  • Price: $
  • Yay’s: Super cheap and decent — Pro Tip: Order the boats if you’re hungry and order for one less person (we got the Viking Boat for 3 and couldn’t finish it between 3 of us).
  • Nay’s: The specialty rolls are alright — big chunks of fish are a little overwhelming
  • Overall Score: 3.5/5

Sushi Star @ Nelson st. & Granville st.

  • Price: $$
  • Yay’s: Adorable spot off the main Granville st. strip. Cheap AND good quality, a rare find.
  • Nay’s: Limited seating and tiny space made it a bit drafty when the door would open. The sushi rice was a bit warm.
  • Overall Score: 4/5

Shizenya @ Nelson st. & Hornby st.

  • Price: $$$
  • Yay’s: Really cute place with friendly servers. They specialize in organic foods for pretty cheap. I had the tofu & avocado salad, which was on point and only $6.95 or something (score!).
  • Nay’s: I also had the spicy tuna roll — all the rolls are made with brown rice, which I wasn’t a huge fan of.
  • Overall Score: 3/5

Sushi Sushi @ W. Broadway & Bayswater st. (Kitsilano)

  • Price: $$
  • Yay’s: Super quick service and great for lunch. I had the salmon & avocado roll for under $5 and was very happy with the quality and freshness of the roll.
  • Nay’s: Limited seating
  • Overall Score: 4/5

Miku @ Granville st. & Water st.

  • Price: $$$$$
  • Yay’s: Incredibly delicious upscale Japanese restaurant serving up some innovative plates. They went out of their way to cater to an allergy I had, making a custom plate for our table. Get the Salmon Aburi (one of their specialties), it will not disappoint.
  • Nay’s: Expensive.
  • Overall Score: 5/5

The Eatery @ W. Broadway & Waterloo st. (Kitsilano)

  • Price: $$$
  • Yay’s: Funky Japanese restaurant with a slightly bizarre pop culture environment.
  • Nay’s: This place wasn’t my favourite for food, but the experience of eating there is worth checking out.
  • Overall Score: 2/5
