It’s a well known fact that having a pet is good for your mental health, but there are other unique benefits to being a pet owner as well. And in honor of National Pet Day, I want to talk about them.

This is a topic that’s very important to me, as I’ve personally seen the direct impact that a pet can have. Both with my own journey, and with other’s.

For instance, I have intense anxiety and often struggle with panic attacks. My cats quickly learned this, and every time I get too anxious, they come around to play with me until I stop hyperventilating.

Plus, knowing that I need to take care of them is sometimes the only reason I get out of bed at all!

My grandmother is another great example. She’s been quite lonely since my grandfather passed away, and she struggles with seasonal depression. But recently, she adopted a kitten and the change in her mood was immediate!

She’s much happier now, and has a fresh spark that I haven’t seen in a while.

But although both my examples involved cats (I’m a big cat person), any pet can have a similar effect on someone’s mental health. As well as providing other benefits.

So let’s dive into why I think everyone should have a pet…
