Stephen Covey once said: “You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage pleasantly, smilingly, and non-apologetically — to say “no” to other things. And the way to do that is by having a bigger yes burning inside.”
Each task of the day should be attainable, realistic, and time-bound. And most importantly every task should advance your goals for the day, week or month. The time constraint will push you to focus and be more efficient.
Time is the raw material of productivity and creativity. Time, not money, is your most valuable asset. Invest your asset. There are 168 hours every week. Let that sink in for a moment. That is a monumental amount of time.…
The other thing I would add is that too many of us, even if we’re not on our phones, are spending most of the time that we’re “listening” trying to think of how we’re going to respond. We listen to the first part of what you’re saying and then go into a mode of trying to shape our response – something witty or funny or interesting… something memorable and insightful so that you feel it was really worth talking to us. By doing that, we completely miss what you’ve actually said… and we’ve missed the opportunity to be truly present… to understand, to empathize, and to provide support.
