Pawns cannot opine on Wazirs. Your illustrious friends may know better.
Anyone born after the 60s, to evaluate the career of a legendary chief, has seen a different army and if they can give anything beyond hearsay and the textbook versions are just giving themselves too much credit.
I just know that if it weren’t for him, and his doctrines taught to many commanders and officials, maybe we would still be fighting with a fucking sten gun, and ww1 tanks. Of course he formulated the separation of the Cdo. battalions, that gave us the specialized theatre sections for COIN, desert, eastern frontier, etc.
I know that when he headed western command, a lot of opposition to his ways of working came from channels that ultimately would lead you to deeply dug in corrupt officers and their cliques ( some of which might have survived ) , and several criminal organizations with embedded assets in our govt. structure, military and parliament. Ergo, the constant criticism and finger pointing, “he’s taking on too much at once” , “he’s going to bankrupt the army “ , “he’s a misfit, bring a tank guy “, “Oh bluestar was a debacle”, etcetera.
Like I said, this I can only understand from what he leaves behind. My opinion is only my impressions and intuition, Herr Claus. I’m too lowly and ‘short-shrift’ to opine much.
