I was recently asked to write 250 words on “bread”. This is what happened…

Bread has played an important part in our lives since 300BC. Whether you’re a fan of a hearty country loaf, a warm roll oozing with melted cheese, or even a sweet honey and cranberry slice, there’s something to suit all tastes. In fact, there are so many different types of bread that we’re having trouble consuming it all.

With 24 million slices of bread going to waste every year, innovative brands are thinking of new ways to save and celebrate our beloved bread.

A trend for artisanal toast bars has been sweeping the US. Just like concept cafes such as Cereal Killers and the crisp sandwich pop-up Simply Crispy, you can now eat your simple slice of toast in style too. Luxury cafes, like The Mill, offer a choice of homemade fruit jams and gourmet spreads to reinvent your toast experience into an adventure for your taste buds. With flavours this delicious, you’ll want to eat every crumb.

And now you can have your bread and drink it too. Hackney Brewery has been taking inspiration from the Belgium bread-based Babylone beer. Drawing on ancient Babylonian techniques and publicly supported by Jamie Oliver, Hackney Brewery is launching Toast. This pale ale is made from unsold loaves and unwanted crusts which add unique undertones of caramel to the full flavoured craft beer.
