Its a fun, appealing and intoxicating fantasy. It a bit of what we crave, escape.

I was traveling for work in my 20’s in eastern Canada driving 2-days to the middle of no-where, Thunder Bay Ontario.

Early in my drive I passed two people on 10-speed bikes with cargo racks and gear strapped to them. I finished my work in Thunder Bay and started driving back and the same two people were just riding into town.

At the time (about 1997), this was a real novelty to see. I pulled over and spoke with them. They started at Niagara falls, and were riding northwest across Canada towards Alaska to get work in the fishing industry and thought this would be a fun way to do it. I thought wow, what freedom.

I told my boss the story, he was in his 50’s, his reaction was wow, what a total lack of responsibility.

I need to work to appreciate my escapes. If ever you crack the code Chris on making work be the escape (somehow still affording healthcare and retirement), please share the post.
