Within the US there remains a deeply rooted divide between those comfortable with things being done for our collective protection, and us doing for ourselves under our personal freedom.
The 2-party political system is based on the same principles: Red team, desires less control (values personal pride and personal freedom) and Blue team, desires more control (willing to sacrifice personal freedom for the greater good).
Consider the image you have of the bike (runs on fat…) and the car (runs on money…). What a wonderful summary of the problem.
To serve the customer there will need to be space for those willing to pay and risk operating under their personal control. Your story offers the suggestion of the racetrack to fulfill this need. Perhaps expand on this to private freeways, or human-controlled-roads. Right, not a separate lane, but a separate roadway for the type of travel like the difference between current roads and railways.
Thank you for the interesting thought experiment David.
Also, we need to address the fears (wether real or imagined) of 100% giving up control. Remember the lesson from I, Robot.
