Canna Jobs: Dreams Are Coming True, Master Cultivator Jobs On The Rise

Recent information provided by MaryJane Agency points to some pretty hefty salaries if you have the experience and the knowledge to fulfil one of three different roles¹ within the industry.
Several other cannabis centric recruitment agencies such as HempStaff are also reporting 30% pay increases for some job roles. The caveat is a move to eastern US states.

Now Is A Good Time To Be In The Cannabis Industry

Let’s be honest, those skills growing weed in your loft or back garden were never really going to net you a $100,000 a year salary, or, will they? Although the skills needed to grow cannabis on this scale versus a commercial platform differ vastly, those with several years of experience growing could be offered a job as a master cultivator. The reward is something many would never think possible, a six-figure salary.

Several states where cannabis has been legalised for either recreational or medicinal use, have developed a vast network of experienced business owners and industry-leading experts. With the marijuana industry forecast to grow into the billions by 2020, the need for highly skilled and motivated individuals is increasing.

Which Jobs Attract The Biggest Salaries

If the idea of a 30% pay rise has you reaching for the nearest contact details of a cannabis recruitment agency, allow us to shed some light on which jobs are being so highly sought over.

• Grow Master (Master Cultivator): $100,000-$120,000
• Extraction Specialist (Master Extractor): $90,000-$120,000
• Dispensary Manager: $80,000-$120,000

There are even examples of assistant managers being recruited with the long-term goal of training to be a manager of their own dispensary. There is no denying on the face of it, now seems like a perfect time to become involved in the cannabis industry. The question is, why the recent influx in salaries?

Why The Sudden Increase?

A rapidly expanding market is driving the sharp rise in annual salaries. Businesses in states newly inducted into the legalised cannabis market lack the required business acumen and product knowledge to make the most profit. The only way to capitalise on these ventures is by enticing experienced figureheads from states that have well-established marijuana markets.

To do so companies are having to finance the relocation, hence the sudden jump in potential earnings. This move from east to west has seen several positions become filled after negotiations of a $30,000-$40,000 increase in annual salary.

The Industry Moving Forward

Robin Ann Morris, CEO of MaryJane Agency and James Yagielo², CEO of Hempstaff both specialise in recruiting candidates in the cannabis business sector. Both have been able to provide examples of where they have filled positions similar to the ones listed above with salaries more than those previously mentioned.

Alongside a want to relocate, potential candidates also need the experience to back it up. Several years experience running dispensaries, or a PhD in fields like chemistry are required if you wish to be either a dispensary manager or a master extractor.

Unfortunately, the same increase in wages cannot be applied for roles further down the managerial chain, like budtenders or those working on cannabis farms. With more states moving towards legalisation, the need for industry experts doesn’t appear to be waning, and if you feel you have the skills and experience to fulfil one of the top three sought-after roles, you could see a massive increase in salary. As long as you don’t mind moving a little further east that is.
