Women of color are pursuing higher education and entrepreneurship at significant rates. Unfortunately, they are still being left out of the tech industry.
Despite the numbers, there is a growing rank of black women pursuing careers in the industry. Here are a few women that are breaking barriers in product management.
Role: Director of Product, Simple Contacts
Brittney Gwynn is the Director of Product at Simple Contacts and recently led the launch of Simple Health, making it easy for women to access birth control. She is focused on acquisition, conversion, and technology development that delivers care directly to patients at their convenience. She started her career at Google, where she discovered gaps in user experiences and anticipated product usability flaws. She later joined SoundCloud where she helped launch new consumer subscription products in several markets. Brittney loves product because it touches all aspects of the business, from marketing, engineering, and business development and currently serves as the NYC City Lead for Black Tech Women.
Role: Lead Product Manager — Ads Creation and Guidance, Facebook
Maryanna leads the 70 person Ads Creation and Guidance pillar at Facebook. The pillar consists of the four teams responsible for ad creation and value delivery for Facebook, Inc. (Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram). Her team manages the Ads Manager App, Ads Manager ads creation/ editing, ads guidance, and abstraction frameworks.
Role: Virtual Reality, Product Lead, YouTube
Erin Teague leads product development on the VR team at YouTube where she’s increased accessibility to YouTube VR to additional hardware devices. You may also have recently caught her keynote at the Women in Product conference last month. Previously, she worked at Yahoo as the director of product management. Teague also had stints at Path, a mobile messaging and image-sharing service where she was credited with that company’s rapid growth, and Twitter. Erin cares deeply about decreasing racial and gender disparities in tech.
Role: Senior Product Manager at Amazon
Rovina is an experienced product leader with a history of building businesses and brands in the tech and e-commerce industry. She leads sub-segment customer experience development within Amazon’s Lifecycle Marketing organization. Rovina assembled the team which built and launched “Amazon’s Textures & Hues” storefront in February 2018, which led to her receiving Amazon’s “Just Do It” award from Amazon CEO, Jeff Bezos.
Role: Lead Product Manager — Apple Store Application, Apple
Jovanna is a product manager at Apple focused on mobile and eCommerce. She’s currently the lead on the Apple Store App, a mobile app used by millions of Apple customers to shop and buy new products, particularly the new iPhone. It’s been identified as one of the best ways to get access to new Apple hardware products.
Role: Global Product Owner — Profile Service, Ebay
Amantha is a Global Product Owner at Ebay within Verticals in the core Marketplace, improving buyer and seller experience at many different places in the shopping journey. She completed three product management internships with the company before joining full-time.
Role: Product Manager, BlueCart Inc.
Kris jumpstarted her career in product at BlueCart. She was the first Product Manager, end-to-end Product Owner, Development Team Manager, and Customer Insight Manager for the organization. Blue Cart is an award-winning B2B SaaS platform and marketplace that is revolutionizing the restaurant industry. Kris specializes in marketplace platforms, e-commerce, fulfillment and operations, and growth strategy.
Role: Product Manager, Apple
Cole transitioned to product management after a successful multi-year career in store management with Apple Retail. Through the Apple Retail development program she spent 3 months creating an in-store tech strategy that made her a sought-after candidate for multiple product management teams post the assignment.
Role: Head of Product at DGraph Labs
Shanea is a technical product manager at DGraph Labs. DGraph is an open-source distributed graph database with flexibility for small businesses and large corporations. Shanea has spent her career developing and executing products that delight users and has successfully championed products across a variety of platforms: web, video, mobile, and artificial intelligence.
Role: Senior Product Manager, Hilton Worldwide
Alicia is a creative and analytical technology product leader at Hilton Worldwide. She’s worked as a product manager for mobile companies and brands across SaaS, publishing, and tourism industries for over a decade. She is an expert at building enterprise software and consumer products with staying power, and her specialties include product management, product development, strategy, and user experience design.
Role: Product Manager, Partner API Integrations at ServiceTitan
Mandy is currently a product manager at ServiceTitan, leading API integration with multiple 3rd party partners. She has previous experience at at Comprehend Systems where she led 20 partner integrations to drive company growth.
Role: Director of Product, Bazaarvoice
Ezinne is a multi-disciplined business leader and general manager at Bazaarvoice where she utilizes her unique balance of creative, technical, and management experience. Ezinne spent time gaining hands-on experience in new product development and consumer and platform product management. She loves fostering entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial ventures.
