Right, this isn’t a search of Apple. But lots of manufacturers are required by duly appointed regulatory authorities to modify the products they sell (whether you deem it “weakening” them or not is a matter of interpretation). Why should Apple be any different?

I also just disagree with Apple’s contention that the sky will fall if there is any such workaround. It can be done. Shared keys, one-time tokens, any number of ways you could approach it. Apple simply does not care to, which is perfectly understandable — they have no incentive to try. For now.
